This 4 days side Project brings me $1000/year
In this article, I’m going to tell you guys, how I made $1000/year from my side project, which is called
It is an Android Keyboard App powered by OpenAI APIs. So Let’s go to the Content
Here, I’m going to tell
- How did I come up with the app idea?
- What technologies did I use to develop this application?
- How did I develop the business model?
- How did I market the app?
- How much money have I earned so far?
and finally, What are the updates I have done as so far to survive in the market?
- How did I get the app idea?
Exactly December 2022, I got to know about the chatGPT and I was impressed.
So I started to explore it, so In those days, there was no mobile app for ChatGPT.
So, I created an OpenAI playground Android app within 2 days and published it in the Play Store. And I got more than 1000+ installs.
After I launched the application, I was thinking about what is the future of this application. During this thinking
I got one idea,
The idea is!
what if I create a keyboard application,
which is specially for checking the grammar and writing the content
Honestly, these are two main reasons I’m using chatGPT for…
So, why a keyboard app, instead of a separate app, The only thing is user experience, If it’s a separate application. Users need to use different applications and do things and copy the text back to the needed application. In this case, if it’s a keyboard application, they just need to switch the keyboard that’s all. The main thing is user experience and accessibility
2. What are the technologies I used to develop the App
In technical wise,
Frontend using Native Android – Java
Backend using NodeJS
Database – MongoDB
The server is the Heroku server
In the Early days, I used Cloudflare free SSL certificate.
And main player is OpenAI APIs that’s none other than OpenAI.
So, if the user types something -> switches keyboard to Open Keyboard AI -> presses the button either check the grammar or generate content -> API call to My Backend server -> openAI API request -> response
3. How I developed the Business model
The main concern is to reach the application all over the countries, so it’s a free Android application but the premium users can use this application than 4 times. So if you are a normal user, within 24 hours you only can access 4 times,
So to access more than 4 times, the user should subscribe to premium.
4. How I market my product
The only marketing I have done so far is creating a demo video on my YouTube channel called Programming make sense , so my lovely YouTube subscribers started using it, it’s everything starts with my YouTube subscribers.
As so far it’s got more than 10K views. Demo video link
so now the app has more than 18K installs all over the world.
5. How much money I earned so far?
To know how much money I earned from this, I’m going to my Play Console page and showing my revenue details.
Revenue = Sales – expenses
Sales = $1049
expenses
- Heroku server – $12 * 12 months
- OpenAI API Billing – $90
- MongoDB – $12
So, Profit is = $803 + youtube demo video revenue($11.68)
update – *here, I’m not not considering *tax and play store fees *15%
What are the updates I have done so far to survive in the market?
The above image explains everything about the latest update
